Root Rot

Root rot is one of the more serious problems that can affect bonsai.

It is commonly associated with roots remaining in excessively wet, poorly aerated conditions for too long.

Signs of Root Problems

Possible symptoms include persistent yellowing, wilting despite wet soil, weak growth, unexpected leaf drop, black, brown, or soft roots, or an unpleasant-smelling soil or roots.

Healthy roots are generally firm rather than soft or mushy.

What to Do

First determine why the root system is remaining too wet.

Possible causes include excessive watering, poor drainage, compacted or degraded soil, blocked drainage holes, or an unsuitable growing medium.

Correcting the underlying problem is essential.

Severe root rot can require removal of damaged roots and repotting, but major root work can place an already weakened tree under additional stress. If you are unsure, seek experienced bonsai advice before disturbing the root system.
